Dear ~~first_name~~,

With last week's leaked Supreme Court majority draft opinion, pro-choice activists have intensified efforts through letters, tweets, posts and protests in the fight for a woman's right to choose and abortion access. Yesterday's failure of our US Senate to pass the Women's Health and Protection Act, while disappointing, was not surprising. This is yet another reason why it is important to vote for candidates who will protect a women's right to make her own healthcare decisions, including the right to an abortion.

The League of Women Voters of Wake County submitted a Letter to the Editor which, in addition to stating our position on abortion, included a call to action for both legislators and abortion supporters to demand support for the right to privacy and safe and legal abortions. In addition, the News & Observers published a Letter to the Editor from LWVNC which stated, in part: “Abolishing the constitutional right to make choices about reproductive rights does not do away with abortions. It just eliminates safe and legal procedures. And the effects will not be felt equally.” The full letter can be found below:

This Saturday, May 14th, the Planned Parent Action Fund in conjunction with Women's March volunteers, have organized Bans Off Our Bodies marches across the country, including in Raleigh. The League of Women Voters of Wake County will be present and march with our League banner. We invite you to join us! The Bans Off Our Bodies - Raleigh march is scheduled for 12pm - 3pm. Those wanting to march need to register on the Planned Parenthood Action Fund Mobilize platform below. Registering will allow you to receive important updates from organizers. As of this mailing, the march route is still being determined so it's important to register.

If you would like to march with LWV-Wake, please register first, then send an email to president@lwvwake.org and let me know you want to march with us.  As soon as the route has been established, I will send an email to those who responded with meeting spot details.

Please note: Our Timely Topics Planning Session is scheduled for 10:30am - 12 noon this Saturday. Several of us marching will be in attendance and leave directly from the League office. If you plan to attend the Timely Topics Planning Session, but did not register, please do so here.

Thanks to all of you who have advocated for women's rights. Though we are tired, we must remain determined.
Sincerely,
Cheryl Tung, president
