VOTE411 image

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV-Wake.

We are in full League mode as we approach Election Day 2022!  Our VOTE411.org website is now live with election information. We have recorded and released Wake County Board of Education candidate forums and we are geared up for the Wake County Board of Commissioners candidate forum, which is being held in-person tomorrow night. Scroll down for more details about all our candidate forums, including Raleigh City Council.

We have several new events on the League calendar, so please take a few moments to review them. Many events are in-person and provide Leaguers opportunities to finally meet each other in person and see 'old' friends as well.

Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage month runs from September 15th - October 15th. The month begins September 15th because that is the anniversary of Spanish independence for several Latin American countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua. Sept. 16 is also the independence day of Mexico. Chile celebrates its independence on Sept. 18.

The next 30 days are a time to honor and uplift the amazing contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Of course, I'd like to recognize our own LWVUS President, Virginia Kase Solomón. Virginia was a recipient of the 2019 Hispanic Heritage Award for Leadership, and in March 2020 she was named to People en Español’s Most Powerful Women of the Year List. To learn more about Ms. Kase Solomón's achievements, click here.

Currently, 9.8% of the population of North Carolina is Hispanic or Latino, 6 out of every 10 Hispanics/Latinos living in NC are U.S. born and the median age of the Hispanic/Latino is NC is just 24. A list of Triangle events that celebrate Hispanic Heritage month can be found here.

From the League
Voter Services
Voter Services committee volunteers began GOTV weekend tabling/voter registration activities at Clouds Brewing in Raleigh during their weekend brunch hours. Weekend tabling will continue through Election Day. We hope you will join us as we celebrate the release of our special "Wheat the People" brew on October 1st. More details can be found below.

We also wish to thank all the volunteers who have spent the last several weeks calling candidates to remind them to complete our VOTE411 candidate questionnaire. It takes the dedication of so many to provide the residents of Wake County with this valuable information. We sincerely appreciate all your efforts!

Environment Committee
The Environment Committee, along with Wake County,  would like your help in reducing food waste in landfills. This summer, members participated in Sustainable America’s “I Value Food: Too Good to Waste Challenge.”  The exercise made participants more aware of the ways food is wasted in our own homes and showed us how to reduce waste in the future.

If you want to reduce food waste in your home, save money, and make a positive impact on the environment, we encourage you to take the challenge as well. The challenge takes 4 consecutive weeks to complete, and involves collecting and composting food that could have been eaten but that you have to throw out, such as leftovers that have gone bad, food that is well past its expiration date, and anything that rotted before you had a chance to eat it. Participants record the amount of food each week. To learn more, and to sign up, click here.

Once you’ve signed up for the challenge, you’ll receive weekly emails with tips for meal planning, food storage, using leftovers, and more. In addition, you’ll see how much you were able to reduce food waste over the four-week period, and learn how to continue the practice. Invite your family and friends to sign up too! It’s good for the environment and for your pocketbook.

If you want to do even more, we invite you to join the Environment Committee. We research and advocate for solutions to climate change, plastic pollution, litter, and many more local environmental issues.
