Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV-Wake.

I hope everyone had an opportunity to recharge and spend time with loved ones over the holidays. As we move into a new year, it's a great time to not only consider personal goals and accomplishments for the coming year,  but also to reflect on past accomplishments as well.

Over the past year, LWV-Wake has:

  • Registered over 1800 new voters at 113 events, with 42 volunteers spending just over 650 volunteer hours.
  •  Engaged over 1,000 voters during our Clouds Brewing collaboration with a special "Wheat the People" brew, netting an $840 donation from Clouds Brewing plus media attention from ABC News 11.
  •  Engaged over 21,000 Wake County voters on VOTE411.org.
  • Implemented our new 5-year LWV-Wake Strategic Plan, with the board revisiting strategic priorities on a quarterly basis.
  •  Hosted a successful Women's Equality Day fundraiser at the beautiful Dix Park Chapel, with over 45 women elected official honorees in attendance, and raising over $9,000.
  •  Hosted 11 candidate forums, including Cary Town Council, Wake County Board of Commissioners and Wake County School Board.
  •  Partnered with 14 Wake County organizations to co-host City of Raleigh Candidate Forums and GOTV projects.
  • Increased LWV-Wake's Board's knowledge of nonprofit board service through attending a 9-week Leadership Boot Camp as part of the League's capacity-building grant award of $15k.
  •  Received a $500 grant from NC Community Foundation to assist with Youth Engagement.
  •  Received $4500 in grants from LWVNC and LWVUS for Voter Services projects.
  •  Established a Pay-What-You-Can Membership to ensure that dues is not a financial barrier for potential members.

These are just some of the League's accomplishments in the past year. We will provide a more in-depth review in our Annual Report at our fiscal year ending June 2023.

We Need You!
We could not do this work without our amazing member volunteers AND donors and grantors! As we look toward 2023, we need more volunteers in order to register and engage voters, deliver our Timely Topics programs, and to carry out special projects like Youth and Civic Engagement.  We also need volunteers willing to serve on our Board of Directors and help with administrative and communications tasks.

As you think about your 2023 goals, please consider how you "can serve", volunteering your time and talents with the League. Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience, providing opportunities to develop new skills and friendships. As Martin Luther King, Jr. said "You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." If you are interested and want to learn more, please email Cheryl Tung at president@lwvwake.org.

Giving Tuesday 2022 Results
Our donors stepped up during our Giving Tuesday/End-of-Year fundraising campaign! We would like to give a big THANK YOU to everyone who participated and showed support for the League!

Through Facebook and member outreach, we raised just over $4k. This included donations from non-members, for which we are extremely grateful! As we continue to see higher event costs, as well as increases in rent and administrative costs, we realize how important it is to reach out to both members and the community for support. We hope the list of League accomplishments above provides strong evidence of our impact in Wake County!

MLK Day
January 16, 2023
As an organization dedicated to Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy, including voting rights, it is only fitting that we dedicate some time/space to honor the greatest civil rights leader who, among other great achievements, helped to pass voting rights legislation through peaceful resistance. If you are looking for a way to honor Dr. King, here are some ideas:
  • Volunteer with the League - We can always use more volunteers!
  • Volunteer for other local projects through Network for Good's MLK Dignity Week here.
  • Learn more about MLK here and here.
  • Join or Donate to NAACP Raleigh-Apex here.

Redistricting Video Thumbnail
LWV-Wake releases Local Redistricting video
A year after receiving a mini-grant from Southern Leadership for Voter Engagement (SOLVE) and an additional grant from LWVNC, we have completed a short video about local redistricting. The goal of the 4-1/2 minute video, which is also available in Spanish on LWV-Wake's Youtube channel, is to educate citizens on the redistricting process and why it's important to get involved to ensure a fair and transparent process.

The video highlights local governments across North Carolina so that it can be used by other local Leagues across the state. We hope our members will find it helpful and share it with friends and other organizations. With the possibility of another round of both state and local redistricting, this video will be an important tool to promote citizen participation. In addition to our Youtube channel, the videos will be part of our future Civics Education web page.

We wish to thank our coalition partners at South Coalition for Social Justice and to the LWVNC board for making these grants available.
