Subject: ACTION NEEDED - People's Rally at the Capitol
From: League of Women Voters of Wake County

Dear ~~first_name~~,

I wanted to share information received today from our coalition partners, Common Cause NC and Democracy NC, regarding the upcoming rehearing of Harper v. Hall and Holmes v. Moore at the North Carolina Supreme Court.

This information comes on the heels of the yesterday's news that the amicus brief, filed by Gov. Roy Cooper and Attorney General Josh Stein in the Harper v. Hall redistricting case, was rejected by the North Carolina Supreme Court.

I urge all of you to join us in opposing the unprecedented re-hearing of these two previously decided cases at the upcoming People's Rally at the Capitol on March 14th 11am-1pm.

From Common Cause:

On March 14-15, 2023, the North Carolina Supreme Court will rehear, and likely re-decide, two crucial voting rights victories in Harper v. Hall and Holmes v. Moore. These two cases — decided by the state Supreme Court just last year — struck down not only voter ID (proven to discriminate against Black voters) but also ruled partisan manipulation of our voting maps as unconstitutional for the first time in the history of the Old North State. Both were unequivocal victories for North Carolinians.

Now, urged on by Speaker Tim Moore and Senate Leader Phil Berger, the high court has decided to bring these cases up again for yet another hearing and, potentially, a new outcome. The only thing that’s changed? The state Supreme Court, which flipped partisan control after the November 2022 elections.

Combined with attacks on early voting, mail-in ballots, free speech and protest, queer and trans* youth, abortion access, and more from the state legislature, North Carolina may prove to be the epicenter of the fight for a just democracy for all.

In response, North Carolinians everywhere from Clay to Currituck, from dirt roads to downtowns, seniors to students, across race and class, are together as a People’s Coalition refusing to let lawmakers pass their dangerous agenda without a fight. We’ll be gathering at the State Capitol (1 E. Edenton St., Raleigh, NC), across from the state Supreme Court, to make our opposition to politicians’ anti-democratic abuses of power loud and clear. Speakers will tell their personal stories of how they’re impacted by the legislature and the courts, and bring this message directly to lawmakers in the legislative building on Jones Street.

We won’t just stop in Raleigh. Next, we’ll be holding town halls across the state — prioritizing our rural hubs — calling on lawmakers to answer directly to their constituents.

Rally with us as we take the first step on March 14 and build our movement to put people over politics.

Thank you for all you do to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy.
