Healthcare - Understanding Alzheimer's & Dementia
About this event
Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging. Join us to learn about the impact of Alzheimer's; the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia; stages and risk factors; current research and treatments available for some symptoms; and Alzheimer's Association resources.
About the presenter: Mary Thompson was raised in and around Boston, MA. Her mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease at the age of 63. After her father passed away, Mary became the sole caregiver for her mother as she moved through the stages of Alzheimer's. Her mother died in 2009.
Mary has been involved with the Alzheimer's Association since 2004 in various volunteer roles. She was a member of the NC Western Alzheimer's Association Board of Directors. After moving to Raleigh, Mary volunteered with the NC Eastern Assoc. Chapter as the volunteer organizer, then one of the Walk organizers for a few years. Over the past 10+ years, she has served as an AIM Advocacy Ambassador at the Federal and State level. This past year Mary completed the training to become a Community Educator.
Mary is a member of LWV Wake and has served on the Finance and DEI committees. She also serves as the LWVNC Treasurer.
