League News
President
Dear ~~first_name~~,

Early voting for the 2024 Primary Election is underway. Primary Election day is Tuesday, March 5. Have YOU made your voting plan? VOTE411 has all the information you need to cast your ballot for the Primary Election, which includes federal and state races. I also encourage you to introduce your personal and professional networks to VOTE411, which is a valuable tool for every voter.

Today is President's Day, or Washington's Birthday as it is still officially known. On this day, it's appropriate to reflect on Washington and Lincoln's most famous speeches and the lessons we can learn from revisiting them.

Washington's Farewell Address warned fellow citizens about the perils of political party factions and foreign interference. Sound familiar? Lincoln's Second Inaugural speech described slavery as the cause of the civil war and called for reconciliation and unity. Remember President Biden calling for unity after the 2020 Presidential election?

Both speeches were historic and speak to complexities our country is still experiencing. Washington's Farewell Address continues to be read aloud on the floor of the U.S. Senate each year on this Federal holiday. To learn more about these speeches, click here and here.

The News & Observer publishes LWVNC President's Op-Ed on New Voting Laws
LWVNC President Jennifer Rubin's Op-Ed was published in the News & Observer on February 11th. In her piece, she explains the new voting changes, including the photo ID requirement, and encourages voters to use VOTE411.org to find sample ballots and other election information. The Op-Ed can also be found on Yahoo News here.

Volunteer Opportunities

Voter Girl Project returns
March 16th

We are excited to announce the return of the Voter Girl Project for Girl Scouts in Wake County. The program features activities that educate Girl Scouts from Daisies to Ambassadors on civic engagement, advocacy and voting using an age-appropriate curriculum.

This event was a huge hit for our volunteers and participants last year. As a result, we have expanded the number of participants this year and need YOUR HELP as we provide advocacy training to our future generation of leaders.

The full-day event will include a morning program from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. for grades K-3. The afternoon program will be held from 1:00 until 4 p.m. for grades 4-8.

Volunteer sign-ups are a now available for both AM and PM shifts. Remember, you must first log into the website as a member to access the volunteer section of our website.

Wake County Board of
Elections Meetings
Volunteers are needed to attend and observe Wake County Board of Elections meetings. It is especially important for League members to observe these meetings during election time to record notes about the absentee ballot and provisional ballot reviews that occur.

It is through these observations that we learn about any deficiencies in how election law is being implemented by poll workers and election board members, as well as any confusion voters may have experienced when casting their ballot. For more information, click here.
