LWV-Wake Update 8/5/24

DONATE

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV Wake.

On August 6, 1965, The Voting Rights Act was signed into law by President Johnson. Although the 15th Amendment gave black Americans the right to vote, some states and voting districts required voters to pay poll taxes or take literacy tests, systematically depriving African-Americans, particularly black women, the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 outlawed these practices and others.

The results of these changes and introduction of voter “examiners” were dramatic. By the end of 1965, the five states of the Deep South alone registered 250,000 new African-American voters. In 1965 only six African-Americans served in the U.S. Congress, none in the Senate. Today, the number of people of color in the US Congress and Senate is 133.

But voting rights challenges continue today. The June 25, 2013 Shelby County vs. Holder Supreme Court decision declared unconstitutional the pre-clearance clause of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The pre-clearance clause required localities and states to submit any proposed changes in voting procedures to the U.S. Department of Justice or a federal district court in D.C. before it went into effect to ensure the change would not harm minority voters. This ruling empowered some states and municipalities to create obstacles to voting that again target people of color.

As we move forward to Women’s Equality Day on August 22 and the General Election November 5 we are re-doubling our efforts to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy and make the difference, ensuring those 18 and over are free to cast their ballots.

Women Power Democracy

Women do indeed Power Democracy and have been doing so since fighting for the right to vote and passage of the 19th amendment. We know democracy is on the ballot this election year. Our mission requires all of us being inspired and ready to roll up our sleeves to make sure voters are prepared. Let's celebrate the 19th amendment and get inspired for the battle ahead.

This year, we have an amazing speaker, Dr. Sara Glova, who is sure to empower us as we work to Get Out the Vote this election season. In addition, many of our women elected officials will be in attendance. This is an opportunity to showcase our League as a strong and vibrant organization in the community.

There are still opportunities to participate by volunteering for the event.  See you all there.

EVENTS

Abortion Access and Democracy in N.C. to be First Timely Topic

Join us for the first Timely Topics of the 2024/2025 season with an important discussion on abortion access in North Carolina.

We will begin the evening with the ACLU’s compelling 10-minute documentary “North Carolina’s Abortion Story.” This screening will be followed by three unique perspectives on how abortion in NC impacts democracy. If you would like to ask question of our three panelists, please submit them in advance to kchoward95@gmail.com.

Timely Topics Book Discussion

Join LWV-Wake members on August 29 at 3 p.m. at RBB Champagne Bar in Cary to discuss Kerri Maher’s historical novel All You Need to do is Call based on the true story of the Jane Collective, a women-led abortion access group founded in Chicago in the years before the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion in the United States.
