LWV-Wake Update 8/19/24

DONATE

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV Wake,

On August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, guaranteeing women the right to vote. Achieving this milestone required a lengthy and difficult struggle that took decades of agitation and protest.

Today, LWV-Wake honors the work of the women who came before us by shining a light on women’s issues, providing opportunities for our neighbors to register to vote, and educating our community on the voting process thru direct contact with the public and our website VOTE411.org.

Women’s Equality Day Gala
This year, we will mark the passing of the 19th amendment at our annual Women's Equality Day gala, which will be held this Thursday, August 22nd, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. All Faiths Chapel at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh. Our theme this year is Women Power Democracy

Dr. Sarah Glova, an NC State alumna, CEO and founder of Reify Media, and 2024 inductee into the North Carolina Women Business Owners Hall of Fame, will be our keynote speaker. Tickets are still available. Purchase your ticket here and help us fill our remaining volunteer slots here.

On behalf of all of our members, I also want to thank each of our sponsors, including this year’s platinum sponsor National Association of Women’s Business Owners.

Register Voters
One of the most important things we do at LWV-Wake is voter outreach to our community. In this issue we highlight dozens of opportunities for you to help the public register to vote.

Read on and help us get out the vote.

In service,
Helen Zimmerman

Women Power Democracy

Women do indeed Power Democracy and have been doing so since fighting for the right to vote and passage of the 19th amendment. We know democracy is on the ballot this election year. Our mission requires all of us being inspired and ready to roll up our sleeves to make sure voters are prepared. Let's celebrate the 19th amendment and get inspired for the battle ahead.

This year, we have an amazing speaker, Dr. Sara Glova, who is sure to empower us as we work to Get Out the Vote this election season. In addition, many of our women elected officials will be in attendance. This is an opportunity to showcase our League as a strong and vibrant organization in the community.

See you all there.

Register at  Women's Equality Day 2024. Registration closes at noon on Tuesday, August 20.

EVENTS

Abortion Access and Democracy in N.C. to be First Timely Topic

Join us for the first Timely Topics of the 2024/2025 season with an important discussion on abortion access in North Carolina.

We will begin the evening with the ACLU’s compelling 10-minute documentary “North Carolina’s Abortion Story.” This screening will be followed by three unique perspectives on how abortion in NC impacts democracy. If you would like to ask question of our three panelists, please submit them in advance to kchoward95@gmail.com.

Timely Topics Book Discussion

Join LWV-Wake members on August 29 at 3 p.m. at RBB Champagne Bar in Cary to discuss Kerri Maher’s historical novel All You Have to do is Call based on the true story of the Jane Collective, a women-led abortion access group founded in Chicago in the years before the Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion in the United States.
