NVRA Newsletter Image

Dear ~~first_name~~,

Greetings from LWV of Wake County. There is much to celebrate this month. May is Asian American Native Hawaiian / Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month.  We acknowledge and appreciate the contributions Asian Americans and Jewish Americans have made to our country.  In addition, June 20th marks the 32nd anniversary of the historic National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) of 1993.

In the 1980s and 90s, LWV led a campaign to pass and implement the NVRA. They founded the Motor Voter coalition. Along with organizations like the ACLU and NAACP National Voter Fund, LWV co-chaired the coalition to streamline confusing state laws and make the voter registration process more accessible.

Through aggressive grassroots advocacy, the coalition pushed the NVRA toward its passage in 1993. President Clinton, who signed the NVRA into law, gifted his pen to the League, deeming them “fighters for freedom” in the continued fight to empower voters. To learn more about the NVRA, click here.

Please attend our Annual Meeting
We invite ALL members to attend our upcoming 2025 Annual Meeting. If you are a new member, we hope you will attend to learn how to become active with the League. Please scroll down to register.

LWVNC Secures Legal Victory in N.C. Supreme Court Race
On May 6th, The U.S. District Court ruled in favor of LWVNC and acknowledged that it is a violation of citizens' constitutional rights to retroactively change the results of an election and throw out legally cast ballots. From lwvnc.org:

“Yesterday’s ruling is a victory for every North Carolina voter who followed the rules and simply wanted their vote to be counted,” said Jennifer Rubin, president of the League of Women Voters of North Carolina. “The League brought this case to stand up for voters who were unfairly targeted after they followed the rules when they cast their ballots. The court recognized the basic unfairness of throwing out ballots that were cast legally after an election and sent a clear message that these tactics have no place in our democracy.”

To read more about this case, please read the press release here.

On May 7th, Judge Griffin, who had challenged voter's ballots in the N.C. Supreme Court Race, finally conceded to Democratic incumbent Allison Riggs, bringing an end to the unresolved contest from the 2024 election.

NCGA Crossover Bills of Interest

May 8th was the crossover deadline for bills during this year's NCGA long session. This is the date by which bills must pass at least one chamber (the House or the Senate) to be eligible for consideration during the current session.

Budget and tax bills are an exception to this rule, and lawmakers also have ways of getting around the deadline and rules, such as gutting and replacing an eligible bill with a new policy, or adding policy proposals into the state budget.

NC Newsline recently published a list of several bills of interest that made crossover. You can read about them here.

Looking for information from a past newsletter? Previous League Updates can now be viewed on our website's home page. Look for the "League Updates" blue tab on the top menu.

Thank you for continuing to support the League of Women Voters of Wake County.

Sincerely,
Helen Zimmerman
President
