Message from President Gaye Williams

 LWV-WAKE NEWS & EVENTS

At the Annual Board Meeting on June 17th, 2025, the results of the 2025 Election were announced, including the new Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Wake County including new Board members Suzanne Botts (Development Director), Liz Simon and Robin Hammond (Members at Large), and Gaye Williams (President). Board Members continuing their service into the new League year include Kristen Howard (Secretary), Johanne Christensen (Director, Co-Chair Voter Services), and Sandra Birckhead (Treasurer). Additionally, new and continuing members of the Nominating Committee were announced, including Cheryl Tung, Suzanne Botts, and Dale Cousins.

One position remains open on the Nominating Committee.

Congratulations and many thanks to all of our Board and Nominating Committee members!

In these days of continual tests of our democracy, it can be difficult to know how each of us can make an impact. One way you can make a difference is through your investment of time, energy, effort, and/or money in the work of LWV-Wake. We need you and hope you'll choose to join or renew your membership.
Remember, if you want to support our Wake County work, please donate to LWV-Wake separately from your membership dues. Visit lwv-wake.org/donate.

Keep things simple by auto-renewing! It’s a great option so your League membership is never interrupted. Just select auto-renewal in the LWVUS Member Portal. You can choose to auto-renew your annual membership or donation to LWV-Wake — or both.

We're Moving! Our lease at our current location is coming to an end and we identified an opportunity to move to another location with the same square footage and a reduced cost. This will allow us to make the best use of donated funds for programs while still providing a central gathering place for members and guests.

Our new office space is in the historic Occidental Insurance building on Wade Avenue near the Village District. This space is not only more affordable than our current office, but also offers additional amenities, including a shared training room and kitchenette, an attractive lobby, outdoor patio, and a larger parking area.  We are seeking volunteers to assist us with our move.

If you are interested in helping to plan or make the move, please email Gaye Williams. We are excited to welcome members for an open house in September. Stay tuned for more details!

The Environment Committee focuses on environmental issues impacting Wake County. Committee members explore issues related to water quality, sustainability, transit, and open space.

To register for this meeting, be sure you log-in to the member portion of the website and then select “Click to Register" and then complete the registration form. Simply adding it to your calendar will not register you!

The LWV-Wake Voter Services Committee will provide voter outreach at the Rolling Together Community Resource Fair at the Green Road Community Center on June 28, 2025, from 11 am to 2 pm.

This event is hosted by the City of Raleigh Community Engagement office.  Residents are invited to stop by and discover government departments and organizations that utilize mobile vehicles to provide resources for the community.  This includes the City of Raleigh Community Engagement Van, ACORNS, Raleigh Fire, and the Wake County Wheels for Health Team.

This event is free to the public, and no registration is required.

We encourage ALL members to attend a meeting for any committee they might be interested in joining.  As an all-volunteer organization, the work of the League is largely done within our committees. You select and invest time in the work that interests you!

Joining a committee is a great way to meet others with similar interests and learn about how you can help with their work. When you decide to join a group, you will receive emails from the chair about meetings and activities. You decide the extent to which you are able or willing to volunteer.

To learn about LWV-Wake’s current committees or to email a chair, go to our Our Work page.

Timely Topics 2025-2026 Planning Meeting

All Committee Co-Chairs, League Leaders, and interested League members are invited to register for the first planning meeting for the new year’s monthly Timely Topics (TT) sessions. The meeting will be in the League office, 3509 Haworth, Suite 306 Tuesday, July 15 10:00 a.m. - noon.

Women's Equality Day 2025

Please join us in celebrating Women's Equality Day! This year's theme 'Stronger Than The Storm' was chosen in recognition of the challenges we face in our continuing fight for equality.

We are excited to announce this year's keynote speaker is Leoneda Inge, co-host of WUNC's program 'Due South'.  Ms. Inge is an award-winning journalist and we are delighted she has agreed to share her stories of resilience with us.

This event raises much needed support for our educational programs, voter outreach, and operating expenses. We invite you to become a sponsor at $150, $300, $500 or $1000 levels. To learn more about Leoneda Inge and to register, click on the link below.

During the event, we will honor and recognize all women who serve as elected officials in Wake County.

This event is our major fundraising event of the year, and we hope all members will support us by attending and purchasing a sponsorship.

If you cannot attend, please consider purchasing a sponsorship and donating your tickets. Please email Gaye Williams if you would like to donate your tickets.
