Dear ~~first_name~~,
Thanks to an incredible wave of sponsorships and a strong list of attendees, our Women’s Equality Day celebration is nearly here and we are ready for a special evening! We have some volunteer opportunities available—your help is still welcome to make the day shine. If you have not already signed up, consider this signature event and come join us.
While we honor the 19th Amendment, we also acknowledge that for many women—especially women of color—the fight for voting rights continued for decades. The League of Women Voters is part of the legacy and, importantly, committed to continuous work to defend and empower voters now and into the future. You can read more online at American Experience (PBS) .
Our members work so hard to help us meet our mission. One great example of this is the impactful work of the Voter Services Committee and volunteers who really stepped-up this summer. Our volunteers have been unstoppable—registering new citizens at USCIS ceremonies (sometimes with less than a day’s notice!), and representing us at Zebulon’s Juneteenth celebration, the Raleigh/Wake County “Rolling Together Resource Fair,” at GalaxyCon, Cindy Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” concert, and the John Wall Family Foundation event. The group’s dedication ensures more voices are heard at the ballot box, and we couldn’t be prouder.
We’ve Moved! We’re now in our new offices and are already busy in our new space.
An editor's note that we will observe Labor day on Monday, September 1, and your next newsletter will be sent on Tuesday, September 2.

Stay tuned for more details about an Open House for members in October! | | Redistricting is certainly in the news these days! Regardless of what happens in current events, North Carolina will draw new district maps after the 2030 census. While this might seem like a long time from now, it takes a lot of planning, education, and preparation to get ready. If you're interested in getting educated or getting back up to speed on Redistricting, consider attending an upcoming training offered by trusted organizations.
CODERED, is a redistricting education program that offers training and resources to help the community to understand and monitor the redistricting process and become more effective advocates for fair maps. The next CODE RED REDISTRICTING training opportunity is Aug 28th at 6:30 pm in Rocky Mount-register here: https://ncblackalliance.org/code-red/ - presented by North Carolina Black Alliance in partnership with Common Cause NC, NC Counts, and Southern Coalition for Social Justice. A virtual attendance option may be offered, watch their space for more information. | |

LWV Statement on Mid-Cycle Redistricting
"The League of Women Voters does not support a tit-for-tat approach to redistricting. State legislatures redrawing their maps mid-cycle reflects political gamesmanship that erodes public trust in our democracy. Redistricting must be fair, transparent, and rooted in the voices of voters — not partisan retaliation.'" –CEO Celina Stewart

August 14, 1935 - President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act establishing the system which guarantees pensions to those who retire at age 65. The Social Security system also aids states in providing financial aid to dependent children, the blind and others, as well as administering a system of unemployment insurance.
August 18, 1920 - The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote. While the 19th Amendment ostensibly removed sex as a barrier to vote for all, it would take decades more before women of color would achieve equal access to the ballot box.
August 28, 1963 - The March on Washington occurred as over 250,000 persons attended a Civil Rights rally in Washington, D.C., at which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. made his now-famous I Have a Dream speech.
