The North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership (IOPL) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization committed to improving the practice of democracy. Their leadership training programs help to prepare people from diverse backgrounds to be public servants—elected, appointed, or through other community involvement. In its 36th year of operation, IOPL has more than 1,100 graduates representing 82 North Carolina counties. Participation in IOPL programs is on the basis of leadership potential and commitment, without regard to age, race, ideology, or party affiliation. The IOPL Fellows Program, their most comprehensive program, teaches skills both strategic (such as running a campaign and making ethical decisions) and practical (such as speaking in public and managing budgets). The Women on Board program energizes women to seek appointed positions on boards in their communities, in addition to improving their confidence and networking skills.
