Anna Julia Cooper Gravesite Field Trip

League members and their guests will visit the gravesite of Anna Julia Cooper at the City Cemetery of Raleigh and learn the highlights of her accomplishments. We will then meet for lunch at a downtown restaurant.

Anna Julia Cooper was born into enslavement in Raleigh but eventually became the first Black American woman to earn a masters and one of the first to earn a doctorate. Her 1892 book was the first to express a Black feminist perspective. She was commemorated on a US postage stamp and is quoted in US passports. Join us as we honor this phenomenal woman and then gather to socialize over lunch!

We’ll meet at the gravesite at 11:00pm for brief remarks about the life of Anna Cooper. The cemetery is located at the corner of East Street and Hargett Street near downtown Raleigh. The gravesite is near the Hargett Street entrance to the cemetery. There is some free street parking as well as inexpensive parking in a lot adjacent to the cemetery on East Street.

The group will then have lunch at Raleigh Times in downtown Raleigh. There are parking decks and metered street parking near Raleigh Times.

If you do not plan to join us for lunch, please email Dianna Wynn at diannawynn@gmail.com to let her know so that she may adjust the reservation.
