ERA Advocacy Letters
Inequality hurts everyone. More than 100 years after some women gained the right to vote, people in the United States are still not constitutionally guaranteed equality on the basis of sex. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) will update the US Constitution to protect the equality of rights under the law regardless of sex. The ERA has met all ratification requirements; it just needs to get published.
In April 2023, the Senate brought SJ Resolution 4 for the ERA joint resolution to the floor. A bipartisan majority of senators supported it, but it failed to reach the 60-vote threshold to overcome a filibuster. The House joint resolution was never brought to the floor.
Instead of being discouraged, let’s send a thank you to encourage those that supported last year’s joint resolutions to continue on. The resolutions introduced in both chambers of Congress will both 1) affirm that the ERA is a valid part of the Constitution and 2) address the question of a ratification time limit.
We will meet in the LWV-Wake office and write letters together. Bring blank thank you cards and envelopes, your lucky pen, and your determination! We will have lists of those that supported the resolutions and we can start with the seven NC House representatives!
