REGISTRATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 10TH-REGISTRATION CLOSED
We will begin the evening with the ACLU’s compelling 10-minute documentary “North Carolina’s Abortion Story.” This screening will be followed by three unique perspectives on how abortion in NC impacts democracy. Questions may be submitted in advance to kchoward95@gmail.com.

About our Panelists:

Liz Barber, Director of Policy and Advocacy American Civil Liberties Union in North Carolina

She first joined the ACLU in NC to improve abortion access for minors and created Text Abby, a text line that connects youth to attorneys to help them navigate the judicial waiver process.

Though she has maintained her focus on reproductive freedom, the breadth of her work has grown to include criminal justice reform, immigrant’s rights, speech privacy, and fighting anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation and more long-term planning for improving reproductive healthcare in the state.

Prior to joining the ACLU, she was a partner at Barber & Barber, PLLC, a general practice law firm, where she focused on criminal defense.

Liz was the president of Judicial District 15b Bar and the Chatham County Bar Association.

She attended UNC-Chapel Hill for Law School and attended the University of Virginia for undergraduate studies.

Liz lives in Chapel Hill with her family and enjoys running in her free time.

David McLennan, Professor of Political Science Director of the Meredith Poll, Meredith College

Dr. McLennan frequently serves as an expert analyst about politics for a variety of news outlets. During the 2020 elections, he appeared on C-SPAN’s Washington Journal to describe the importance of North Carolina for control of the White House and the U.S. Senate. Other national media appearances during the 2020 elections include FOX News, Politico, Reuters, and Bloomberg. He frequently appears on WRAL-TV, Spectrum News, CBS North Carolina, and ABC 11 to discuss North Carolina and national politics. His op-eds have been published in U.S. News & World Report, The Hill, Congressional Quarterly Researcher, and the News & Observer.

In 2015, McLennan founded the Meredith Poll, a statewide survey of public opinion of North Carolina voters. The Meredith Poll is the only statewide poll focused on women’s issues, and it was started to help students develop skills that will assist them at Meredith and in their careers. Read more about the impact of the poll on students. McLennan is the author of Meredith College’s Status of Women in North Carolina Politics reports. These reports examine North Carolina women as appointed and elected officials, candidates, and voters.

Dr. McLennan is a sought after guest speaker for corporations and organizations such as the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters, and Duke Energy.

He also delivers educational programming for Meredith’s Office of Corporate and Community Engagement, retirement communities, and other continuing education groups.

Simran Jain (she/they)

Jain is a queer, Desi activist and poet based in Durham, NC. She graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans where she studied Political Science and Gender and Sexuality Studies.

Before joining Team SisterSong, she worked at the Center for Community Alternatives, an anti-incarceration non-profit based in Syracuse, NY, where she provided violence prevention education and after school programming for youth.

Her journey with SisterSong began in 2019 as an intern through Collective Power and she is a practicing abortion doula. Today, Simran is the National Membership Coordinator with SisterSong and aims to expand the Reproductive Justice community.

Simran believes in the power of art to grow movements and uses poetry as a tool for her activism. Her work has been published by The Academy of American Poets’, BigCityLit, The South Asian Sexual and Mental Health Alliance, and more.
