About this event

Timely Topics February 2025
Join us on Thursday, February 20th at 5pm as we welcome guest speaker, Betty Marrow-Taylor, Chief Culture & Community Engagement Officer, NC Department of Commerce.

Ms. Marrow-Taylor will explore the impact and importance of initiatives that promote fairness, opportunity, and a sense of belonging in workplaces and communities across North Carolina.

She will highlight the benefits of creating environments where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute, as well as share insights on how we can support engagement efforts to build thriving, inclusive businesses, organizations, and communities.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER:

Prior to joining NC Dept. of Commerce, Betty served as Deputy Secretary at the North Carolina Department of Administration overseeing the Advocacy Division, with oversight of the Historically Underutilized Businesses unit (HUB), the Commission of Indian Affairs, the Council for Women and Youth Involvement, and the Division of Non-Public Education. During her tenure at Administration, she also served as Director of Policy and Strategic Development and as Executive Director of the N.C. Human Relations Commission.

Betty has extensive experience working with numerous boards and commissions, including the N.C. Commission on Inclusion, the Andrea Harris Social, Economic, Environmental, and Health Equity Task Force, N.C. Commission on Indian Affairs, Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, N.C. Women’s Advisory Council and Domestic Violence Commission.

Prior to joining the Department of Administration in 2017, Betty held senior level positions in corporate, government, and non-profit organizations, including with the Centers for Disease Control National HIV/STD Division, Biogen, and a local Area Mental Health program. She is a former educator as well, once serving as an Adjunct Professor at Meredith College and an elementary school teacher.

Betty’s passion for serving others, specifically underserved people, extends beyond her professional career. Over 10 years ago she co-founded a local non-profit organization that has helped thousands of children and their families, combatting poverty issues, and helping to improve the quality of life for families struggling daily in Durham and surrounding rural communities.

Betty has a Master of Education and Administration degree from North Carolina Central University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
