Earth Day 2024
Dear ~~first_name~~,

With the 2024 Primary Election behind us, we are focused on educating voters for the 2024 Second Primary Election on May 14th, as well as scheduling voter outreach opportunities leading up to the 2024 General Election. We encourage voters to think about the issues they care about, learn which candidates support those issues, and VOTE.

One issue that everyone should be concerned about is our environment. We were reminded just last week as we watched the solar eclipse that we live on a planet within a huge solar system. Our planet requires us to care about the effects of daily living; warnings have been made for years about the harm we cause our planet by mindless consumption. Earth Day serves to remind us that we must make positive changes in consumption to protect our planet.

Earth Day was created in 1970 by environmentalist and U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, following an oil spill in California. Shortly after, President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and signed the Clean Air Act.

This year's Earth Day theme is Planet vs. Plastics to call attention to the health risks associated with plastics. In addition, organizers have created a goal to reduce single use plastics by 60% by 2040. Please visit https://www.earthday.org/ and learn about how we all can do more to reduce dependence on plastics, especially single use plastics.

Looking for a way to celebrate Earth Day? Attend the City of Raleigh's Earth Day 2024 at Dix Park on April 19th from 5pm-10pm. This FREE community event features earth-conscious vendors and organizations and offers live music, games, and activities for all ages.  A family-friendly movie will conclude the event. For more information, click here.

We also invite members to join our Environment Committee. Led by Co-Chairs Jackie Giordano and Eve Vitaglione, members take field trips, host guest speakers, and participate in advocacy projects to help draw attention to issues effecting our environment. You can join by simply adding yourself to the committee on the "Our Work" website page, and reaching out to Jackie or Eve.

Volunteer Week Honors YOU

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognize and thank you, our volunteers, who lend and use your time, talent, voice, and resources. Our volunteers chair committees, encourage and help residents vote, spotlight important issues, and make change that matters. Only by working together on our shared vision can we make a difference. During Volunteer Week, we will focus on you, our volunteers, and illustrate that each individual has the power to make a difference.
